In honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re honored to welcome one of our biggest fans, Elle, to the blog. Below she shares her personal story of triumph in the face of adversity and how a little positivity goes a long way.

Not too long ago, I went to the Alex and Ani website to look for something for a friend that was graduating. As I was looking, I found several bangles that seemed as if they were made for me. You see, a few years back I was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor and disease. I also have been diagnosed with multiple serious chronic illnesses throughout the last few years. My stomach is paralyzed so I rely on a feeding tube for nutrition, I had a boney mass on my spine that was removed that left me with a paralyzed left leg from the knee down – and that’s just the beginning.

As a teenager, it’s been hard spending more time in the hospital than at home. Nurses and doctors are more of my friends than people my own age. In the last year, I’ve had 14 brain surgeries and getting ready for my 15th. Because of being in the hospital so much, I knew I had to get the Positive Is How I Live bangle. Now I always look at it and remind myself to stay positive. I often have to get many painful procedures done and I thought getting the Hero bangle would be perfect. It benefits Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and although I am not a patient there, I wanted to support a children’s hospital since they have done so much for me. During difficult procedures, I hold onto it as a reminder that I am a hero and that I CAN get through anything thrown my way. My Alex and Ani bangles give me so much hope and courage when I need it the most. Thank you, Alex and Ani!
